Healthy Foods To Prevent Sunburn

A few people know that sunscreen is important but it is not the best way to prevent UV rays. Some strong UV rays can get through suncream and still penetrate your skin. So you should nourish your skin from the inside.

A way to keep it healthy from the inside is eating lots of antioxidant foods to increase the skin’s ability to fight against UV rays. The key to preventing sunburn is using antioxidants to eliminate free radicals that cause premature aging.

Following are foods that have a lot of antioxidants you should eat to protect your skin from sunlight.

Omega-3 rich foods

Omega-3 fatty acids are present in many foods, especially seafood and fatty fish. Research has found that these compounds can protect cells from free radicals’ threats (created by sunlight).

Fruits and veggies in red and orange

Science proved that lycopene, a carotenoid pigment (in tomatoes and fruits in red and pink), can combat allergies such as erythema. Besides, lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals. In addition, veggies and fruits in red and orange have beta-carotene, which was proven to prevent the body from sunburn. Moreover, they contain flavonoids that help fight the UV rays very effectively.

Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate contains lots of flavonoids that improve the skin’s protective abilities and reduce sun damage including sunburn. On the other hand, flavonoids ensure to keep the skin elastic and moisturized, increase oxygen saturation and make the blood circulate better.

Cruciferous vegetables and dark green vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, kale and white cauliflower, which contain a large number of antioxidants to help prevent free radicals. They also have sulforaphane that improves the skin’s protective abilities and prevents cancers. Spinach has many antioxidants such as polyphenols and carotenoids, which can protect your skin in the sun. Additionally, fresh herbs including coriander and basil have the same effect.

Tea

Tea, including green and black tea, contains polyphenols that can slow the development of cells by restricting blood flow to this area. Many studies also showed that sipping tea every day can help reduce malignant tumors in the body.
